Department Summary:

MITRE’s Responsive Operational Planning Department in the Air Operations Division of the Air & Space Forces Center is seeking a Lead Systems Engineer for the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s Kessel Run division (AFLCMC/HBB). The successful candidate will work closely with the Project Leader (PL) and with the sponsor’s leadership, as well as the engineers from MITRE, the government, and other contractors to set the direction for the product(s) being produced by Kessel Run. The selected candidate will apply their technical and/or operational background to advise the sponsor and help them develop their roadmap for future development of their product line(s).

Additionally, the candidate will provide deep technical knowledge to advance integrated enterprise operations within AFLCMC/HBB Flight Operations Portfolio. Lead the technical effort to integrate Kessel Run’s flight scheduling platform with an information sharing vision and architecture for enterprise services, data, and applications. To guide program systems engineering including program planning, analysis and insight into subsystem and system design and integration, requirements flow-down, design performance, and cost trades. Deliver program strategy to consider cross-system integration and interoperability, lessons learned from other programs, and technology commonality for newly established flight operations platform and its associated systems.

Job Description:

  • Provide technical advice to the Wing C2 Branch of Kessel Run on the future direction of their Flight Operations systems.

  • Work closely with the PL to lead and shape the work program as a critical member of the leadership team.

  • Execute customer work shaping and engagement plans aligned with project and organizational goals.

  • Provide objective solutions and recommendations to address customer challenges.

  • Build and sustain a trusted relationship with the customer and key stakeholders.

  • Lead technical teams to define and deliver high quality data-driven technical products and/or solutions with actionable recommendations for the sponsor.

  • Communicate, written and verbally, with customer and MITRE on status of products in a concise, professional, and timely manner.

  • Collaborate across MITRE, DoD, and external partners.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to qualify for and willingness to hold a TOP SECRET DoD clearance.

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills with experience briefing VIPs.

  • Ability to collaborate across multiple teams working on large and diverse projects.

  • Passion for the Air Operations mission.

  • Proven track record in achieving significant work program, sponsor, or organizational outcomes.

  • Strong track record of building sponsor trusted advisor relationships.

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An active TOP SECRET clearance with ability to qualify for and willingness to hold a TS/SCI DoD clearance.

  • Strong knowledge of agile software development methodologies and DevSecOps processes

  • Strong knowledge of Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) concepts

  • Familiarity with the MITRE Platforms

  • Proven track record of innovation

  • Familiarity with higher level AF and DoD strategy, particularly as it relates to all domain operations and data sharing.
