Southern Company Financial Analyst – Data Analytics and Reporting in Birmingham, Alabama

This Financial Analyst within the APC Finance and Corporate Planning Team will support the Power Delivery business unit. The position will be responsible for creating and supporting comprehensive financial reports and insights using advanced data analytics tools such as Power BI and Excel. In addition, the ideal candidate will share their reporting and data analytics expertise with other Financial Analysts within the group. The Financial Analyst will play a critical role in supporting the company’s financial planning, analysis, and decision-making processes. Candidate is expected to utilize various databases and financial applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize Power BI, Excel, and other data analytics tools to collect, analyze, and interpret complex data sets.

  • Develop and maintain financial models and reports to support the company's strategic initiatives and decision-making processes.

  • Conduct interactive training sessions, workshops, and webinars to educate employees on using Power BI, including data importation, model creation, report design, and dashboard development.

  • Provide one-on-one coaching and support to employees at various skill levels to ensure they can apply Power BI techniques effectively.

  • Create training materials such as user guides, tutorial videos, FAQs, and best practices documentation.

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of financial reports and dashboards as part of the learning process.

  • Building strong working relationships with internal and external business partners to develop a deep understanding of the business.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather relevant data and insights for financial analysis.

  • Identify trends and patterns in financial data, providing actionable insights to management.

  • Conduct ad hoc financial analysis as required to support various projects and initiatives.

  • Ensure the integrity and accuracy of all financial information.

  • Continuously improve financial reporting processes and systems to increase efficiency and accuracy.

Candidates that meet the below qualifications are encouraged to apply:

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Computer Science, Information Technology, and/or Data Science preferred or related field and/or relevant experience.

  • Experience in Utility Industry Budgeting & Accounting Organization.

  • Working knowledge of Enterprise Foundation systems and tools such as Oracle Cloud ERP, Oracle Planning, and PowerPlan.

  • Proven experience in financial reporting and analysis.

  • Strong working knowledge of Power BI, including data modeling.

  • Ability to utilize and develop tools to access, integrate, analyze, and visualize data from multiple sources.

  • Knowledge of DAX, Toad for SQL Server, Microsoft SQL Server Management, Visual Studio, etc. is a plus.

  • Commitment to continuous personal development and process improvement.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite with proven focus on Excel and PowerPoint

Other Requirements

  • Occasional travel, including some overnight.

  • Live within a commutable distance of Birmingham, AL

  • Candidate must be authorized to work in the US without the need for visa-sponsorship now and in the future.
