National Jewish Health is seeking a Medical Assistant to join our Adult Pulmonary Clinic. The back office Medical Assistants on our team play a large role in the Pulmonary department and are the heart of our clinic.

The Adult Pulmonary Clinic is the largest department at National Jewish Health and offers a fun and fast-paced environment. Our Medical Assistants help ensure that clinic flows smoothly, and communicate closely with our providers and nursing staff. These responsibilities include hands-on clinic needs such as immunizations, telehealth and tracking the needs of clinic. Other back-office duties include administrative work such as prior authorizations, peer-to-peer evaluations, add-on testing, and records requests. Communicating via portal and phone with patients to triage symptom calls, scheduling requests, and medication refills require our back-office Medical Assistants to be well-versed in phone ettiquete along with hands-on clinical experience.

This position can be filled with a Medical Assistant I or Medical Assistant II based on skills and years of experience.

Position Summary

Medical Assistant I:

The Medical Assistant I performs basic clinical activities in support of physicians and nursing staff. They deliver safe and appropriate patient care within the scope of practice and established policies and procedures under the direct clinical supervision of a licensed professional.

Medical Assistant II:

The Medical Assistant II promotes efficient, high-quality clinical practice by providing guidance through collaborating with the team to manage patient flow and communication. To deliver safe and appropriate patient care within the scope of practice and established policies and procedures, under the direct clinical support and supervision of a licensed professional.

Essential Duties

Medical Assistant I: Assists with preparing patients for examination and may obtain patient medical history by accurately taking vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, height, and weight) and documents the results in appropriate systems and/or EMR. May review medication list. May perform spirometry and/or other pre-appointment testing and documents the results appropriately. Reviews charts and prepares them for the following day as indicated. Stocks patient care areas with the necessary supplies. Performs clinical skills as guided by competency validation. Coordinates with other clinics to ensure quality patient experience. Medical Assistant II: Assists with preparing patients for examination and may obtain patient medical history by accurately taking vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, height, and weight) and documents the results in appropriate systems and/or EMR. May review medication list. May perform spirometry and/or other pre-appointment testing and documents the results appropriately. Performs clinical skills as guided by competency validation. Implements plan for each clinic ahead of time to identify and anticipate potential clinic flow problems; Monitors master schedule; Resolves unexpected patient flow issues. Coordinates telephone communication with patients, families, referring providers, and other members of the health team; utilize follow-up system to assure care follow up and coordination is accomplished; tasking by utilizing scripted callbacks relaying messages from the clinical licensed rofe Responsible for administrative function to support clinic: manual billing, error correction, data entry, photocopying, prior authorizations, answering unit/clinic phone, taking phone messages, faxing, and obtaining recor Provides and documents appropriate education to patients/families utilizing effective teaching skills, scripted teaches, and the National Jewish supportive materials as directed by a licensed clinical professional. Precepts and orients new team members to their function in clinic. May perform a variety of routine blood drawing procedures to include venipuncture techniques using standard equipment - including vacutainer tubes, tourniquets, syringes, butterfly needles and straight needles. Reporting of any adverse reactions to supervisor or nursing staff.

Other Duties Medical Assistant I: None Medical Assistant II: May collect and correctly label lab specimens utilizing the correct collection procedure from patients. May prepare specimens for analysis by centrifugation, separating specimens from red cells, and other techniques required for distribution of the sample to the appropriate area. May utilize point of care instruments, such as the ISTAT, Piccolo, glucometer, etc. May perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) or other diagnostic tests on patients as directed, processes and files patient charts, and monitors procedure activity under supervision.
