Job Description:

The UF Health Cancer Center is seeking applicants for the position of STAS Genetic Counseling Intern. The essential functions of this position are:

Program Related Duties:

Assists genetic counselors and clinic supervisor. Screens patients for genetic counseling. Builds a relationship between patients and the Hereditary Cancer Program. Responsible for scheduling individual session dates with genetic counselors and genetic counseling assistants, and coordinating patient appointments with other physicians. Organizes timely cancer genetic counseling for urgent referrals by physicians,depending on their medical management requirements. Speaks with patients (by phone/in person) to collect detailed family histories for review by the genetic counselor. Scans and emails information to patients with proper authorization. Scans for archival purposes. Communicates with physicians in person, via phone. fax, and email regarding their patients. Answers and resolves routine phone inquiries and triaging calls to genetic counselors. Prepares risk assessments using cancer genetic software, patient charts and patient forms for the genetic counseling session appointments. Prepares pedigrees for use by the genetic counselor and genetic counseling assistants in the sessions. Greets all patients and guides them to their counseling sessions. Assists genetic counselors during the genetic counselling session with paperwork. Pulls and schedules referrals from Epic and faxes from other non-UF providers. Transfers data from referrals to Progeny database and Outlook calendar. Uses EPIC to generate medical record numbers for patients that have not previously been seen at UF Health. Uses Epic/Cadence to view patient records and upcoming appointments with other physicians.

Database Administration:

Assists with administering a stable Progeny relational database. Inputs patient information, medical history and demographics received from referrals and family history questionnaires. Transfers results from genetic tests into Progeny database. Creates and updates tables, queries, fields, forms, and reports. Tracks patient information, genetic test results, medical record requests and family histories. Abides by the rules set forth by HIPAA to protect patient health information on genetic counseling database.

Genetic Testing Processing:

Prepares patient records for cancer genetic testing and research testing. Assists with requests for primary care physician’s medical necessity letters. Assists in necessary preparation of documentation for test processing. Guides patients through genetic testing process: completing paperwork, facilitating sample collection (blood, saliva), and preparing the genetic testing kit for shipping. Assures the safe package of blood samples, saliva samples and tumor samples to the appropriate labs. Assures that tumor samples from other institutions arrive at the Hereditary Cancer Program in a timely manner for testing and also returned in a similar fashion. Assures the timely arrival of test results to coordinate with upcoming patient disclosure sessions. Assists with sample collection.

Clinical Support Duties:

Assists with informed consent sessions. Greets patients and guides them to their informed consent session. Guides patients through genetic testing process: obtaining informed consent, completing paperwork, facilitating sample collection (blood, saliva), and preparing the genetic testing kit for shipping. Assists with documenting sessions in EMR as a Clinical Support Encounter.

Advertised Salary:

$14.00 hourly

Minimum Requirements:

This position is open to all students who are eligible to work on campus and will be employed through student Other Personnel Services (OPS) and must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Registered students are employed on a part-time basis, up to 20 hours per week.

Successful pre-employment screening including a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in a relevant degree program with an interest in health awareness, genetics, and/or counseling.

  • Good computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Experience with Progeny software or other pedigree drawing applications.

  • Experience with Epic electronic medical records system.

  • Excellent customer service.
