Brief Position Overview

The Head Chef is responsible for the daily operation of MSU -Northern Dining Services, to include the supervision of staff, management of inventory, coordination with vendors, budget oversight, and ensuring that health and safety standards are met and reviewed appropriately.

The Head Chef collaborates closely with the Director of Catering Services, to ensure coordinated efforts for staffing, event scheduling and menuing, inventory management. The Head Chef and the Asst Dean of Sales & Finance jointly lead food services efforts on campus, sharing a team of dedicated professional and student staff and ensuring that there is strong communication, efficient use of resources, and continuity of expectations for staff.

The Dining Services and Catering teams will frequently interact with students, staff, faculty, senior administration, visiting dignitaries, and the larger Havre and Hi-Line communities. As a result, it is critically important for the leaders in these areas to facilitate an environment focused on cooperation and communication, customer service, and student-first thinking.

General Statement

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as Head Chef of dining services by managing human and financial resources. Manage operation of a large food service area by training and supervising staff; managing overall inventory and product levels; working with vendors on product ideas and prices; enforcing health and safety standards; delegating work for best efficiency; and working with upper management on policies, big picture/long term goals, marketing strategies, product changes or additions. Ability to research and disseminate information through clear and consistent communication. Includes oversight of a budget.

  • Plans, prepares, coordinates, conducts, and documents all aspects of culinary training programs for dining service staff and student employees; trains culinary staff in new procedures, recipes, and equipment; assesses training and development needs; evaluates and revises on-boarding and training materials and procedures; develops resources to meet training needs. Monitors progress of new employees.

  • Coordinates with Director of Catering with menus, time requirements for service, and estimated charges; determines and coordinates menus, meal set-up requirements, customizes menus to meet specific customer needs; corresponds through written and verbal communication to confirm arrangements.

  • ServSafe and TIPS training and certification are required for the position and should be completed by end of first month of employment and kept current throughout employment.

List any secondary duties assigned to this position:

  • Collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Students for Finance & Retail in the development and oversight of the Dining Services budget.

  • Collaboration with Student Affairs staff, to include coordination of student support opportunities, program development and implementation, and the identification of opportunities for cross-training and resource-sharing.

  • Various committee appointments.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of or experience with institutional food service or other professional culinary experience.

  • Knowledge of or experience with large quantity cooking.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Food service management experience (supervision, inventory management, budgeting, etc.).

  • Formal culinary training.

  • ServSafe and TiPS trained (or the ability to complete these trainings).

  • Associate Degree or higher.

Title IX Coordinator

The Title IX Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the University’s compliance with federal and state discrimination and harassment laws, including Title IX.
