Are you passionate about sports and yearn for the thrill of being in the midst of the action? Look no further – we have the perfect opportunity for you!

Parks and Recreation is currently seeking Softball Officials for our adult league of competition. The ideal candidate will bring a positive attitude to the field and create a welcoming, enjoyable atmosphere for all participants.

The season kicks off on May 22, 2024. Games are exclusively scheduled for Wednesday nights, starting at 6:15 pm, and will take place at Fort Missoula Regional Park.

Games are 1.25 hour

MOA Rate is $33/Game

Non-MOA Rate is $26.00/Game

Details: Applicant Screening will begin immediately. Applications will continue to be accepted until an adequate applicant pool has been established.

Essential Functions

  • Officiate games, tournaments, and other sporting events to ensure compliance with league rules.

  • Judge performances in games to award points, impose scoring penalties, and determine results.

  • Inspect and set up sports equipment and observe all participants to ensure safety.

  • Keep track of event times, starting or stopping play when necessary.

  • Signal participants or other officials when infractions occur or to regulate play or game.

  • Resolve claims of rule infractions or complaints by participants and assess penalties when necessary, according to regulations.

  • Assist in emergency procedures.

  • Promote positive sportsmanship for participants and spectators.

  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques used in recreational and competitive sporting events.

  • Knowledge of rules and game play of specified sport, with the ability to interpret and apply City adapted rules and regulations.

  • Skill in promoting positive and safe environments.

  • Skill in relying on judgement to make split second decisions and rulings on infractions and penalties, with the ability to make proper calls on command.

  • Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with diverse individuals.

  • Ability to lead and work with both adults and youth of all ages.

  • Ability to effectively meet and communicate with the public and deescalate stressful situations.

  • Ability to maintain and exhibit integrity and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.

  • Ability to maintain and foster a culture of professionalism, adhere to departmental and City standards and specifications, and support a positive team environment.

  • Ability to accept criticism and resolve conflicts with facilitating outcomes while maintaining a calm demeanor.

  • Ability to learn departmental and City of Missoula practices and procedures.

Working Conditions:

  • Positions require the ability to lift 50 lbs. or less.

  • Work environment may involve occasional exposure to unavoidable seasonal weather conditions.

Qualifications and Additional Application Materials

  • Any combination of training and experience with leading sports or recreation programs.

  • Must have experience officiating and/or playing specified sport.

  • Must be of legal age to perform the duties of the position.

  • Officiating certification, preferred.

  • Adult CPR/First Aid certification, preferred.
