TITLE: Risk Manager

POSITION SUMMARY

The Risk Manager is responsible for the implementation of the facility’s risk management and patient safety activities in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

The position supports and implements key operational strategies to measure, monitor and analyze the culture of safety, event reporting, identification, and mitigation of risk events.

Provides accountability to development of corrective and preventive actions. Evaluates the effectiveness of the event reporting system.

The Risk Manager is responsible for administering the risk management program on a day-to-day basis, managing and analyzing risk management data and event reports, conducting risk management educational programs, complying with risk management related standards by accrediting and regulatory agencies, supporting liability claims, and coordinating insurance coverage and risk financing with the objective of maintaining patient safety, enhancing quality care, and minimizing loss to protect the assets

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

Certification (CPHRM) is preferred but required within 3 years of employment.

Ideally, the candidate will have 4-8 years in risk management experience, RN preferred but not required.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Strong written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal, motivational and conflict resolution skills. Strong management and administrative skills. Broad-based knowledge of hospital related regulatory compliance requirements. Presentation skills, team player, ability to influence change without direct authority, and negotiation skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:

Office and/or Clinical Setting. Exposure Class I or II – dependent on service.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Sedentary work: Requires extended periods of sitting, standing, and walking. Occasional bending, reaching, and lifting under 10 pounds.

All services, employees, medical staff, patients, visitors, vendors, various regulatory and professional agencies.

OPERATIONS/COMPLIANCE

Is responsible for data management, claims management, and the education components of the facility’s risk management program. Promotes the organizational patient safety initiatives. Collaborates with department director on budget development.

LOSS PREVENTION/PATIENT SAFETY

Organizes and manages facility-wide educational programs on health care risk management and related subjects for health care practitioners. Presents such programs in conjunction with the facility’s education department or other organizations. Supports the patient safety initiatives through direct participation on committees/task forces. Influences development of risk management budget for senior management approval. Develops, coordinates, and administers facility-wide systems for risk identification, investigation, and reduction. Serves as business owner for the electronic event reporting system. Manages daily event reports (reviewing, referring to appropriate leadership, promptly investigating, validating and updating fields for accuracy and completeness. Maintains a network of informational sources and experts; performs risk surveys and inspects patient care areas; reviews facility to assess loss potential. Works with senior leadership to develop risk mitigation plans associated with litigated claims.

CLAIMS MANAGEMENT

Works collaboratively with the Trinity Health Area Claims Manager and works directly with Legal Counsel as requested. Has ongoing access to facility liability defense counsel to consult regarding both preventive and corrective measures to be taken in situations having legal connotation. In litigated claims, assists legal counsel in accessing facility records as requested to prepare defense for the claim. Coordinates with legal council to identify employees and schedule interviews, depositions as necessary.

RISK FINANCING

Has general knowledge of, and is familiar with, how the facility’s insurance coverage may apply to liability and casualty loss, which includes self-insurance funding, premium allocation, risk retention, and/or potential coinsurance/excess insurance coverage.

Pay Range: $45.50- $66.60

Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
